Well, 2020 was an interesting year

Just a few more hours to go and I can say we survived 2020.  The last time this planet faced such a plague was in 1918 with the Spanish Flu.

Here in the UK, things look scary with our infection rates and hospitals becoming overwhelmed.  But we have hope with vaccinations.  I have been vaccinated and was due to have my second dose in about two weeks time.  Instead, I am going to have to wait three months for my second dose, and we do not know if the first vaccine will cover me for that long.

But I am a patriot.  I know that it is more important to the nation for more people to get one dose, rather than for me to get better protection.  This means that my wife and friends will get one dose, and therefore some protection sooner than otherwise.

Fingers crossed that all my friends and family survive to see the next Nee Year.

I am proud to be British, most of the time.

Right now, I am ashamed at the acts of some of my fellow Brits.

Our nation has a lot to be proud of, as well as things that we need to remember so that we learn from and never repeat.  An example of this is the actions of the UK when it came to the transatlantic slave tradeThe UK profited from it, and despite the huge profits made (something that not everyone agrees on), ended it and tried to end it abroad as well.

It was reported, that due to the new variant of COVID, Switzerland placed British holidaymakers in quarantine.  Despite the risks posted to others, many Brits decided to flee, some using the lateral flow tests as proof that they were not infectious.  (These tests are good for screening but are not good for testing if someone with symptoms has COVID or not.)

If that was not bad enough, loads of Brits decided to attend a super spreader event in Australia.

Living in Colchester, I can see how most are obeying the restrictions.  But it only takes a few morons to infect and kill others.  I am proud about how most people in Britain are obeying the rules, but I am so ashamed at the actions of this idiotic minority.

Battleships

Today, I went into work.  My daughter came with me as she likes to do her homework there and we spent about an hour or so there before returning home.

At home, after a bit of a rest, we all went out for our family dog walk.  It was a bitterly cold day and when we got there, time was short as sunset was approaching.  Leia loved meeting other dogs again and met more this time than before.  Socially distanced chats with other dog walkers took place and both children took turns holdings her lead.  I suspect that next time, my son will wear more appropriate footwear as he was not as prepared as he would like.

Anyway, we are now relaxing playing Battleships. My daughter did not realise that she was beating me in the first round at first, but once she did, she did not let go of her advantage and slaughtered my fleet.  My kids are now playing against each other and they will decide who I play next.

My daughter is truly evil.

My daughter is evil.  She knows I do not like to know the football scores before watching Match of the Day.  I did not watch the game last night but I knew that Arsenal was 2-0 up at half time when I accidentally saw the scores when looking at social media.  But my daughter later told me yesterday that the score was 3-0 before it ended, which stressed me out as I know that Arsenal have thrown away leads like that in the past, examples being against Wigan in 2010 and against Newcastle in 2011.  I still watched it, and yes, we went 3-0 up.  And then Chelski scored.  I said many rude words about her.  So when Chelski got a penalty, my heart was in my mouth.  We still won, and Chelski did make it easier for us, possibly because they thought that three points were guaranteed.  To be fair, I thought that they were to win as well.  Anyway, after watching it in the morning, I confronted her about this and she laughed.  I have done similar in the past to others I know, about things like Game of Thrones (one of my friends at work watched the seventh series as a box set and I may have convinced her that something that did not happen did).

On a different note, I had hoped that we were all to go for a walk as a family.  We had agreed that, but my son changed his mind, because he was asked to zip up his hoodie.  I was disappointed.  Leia would have loved us all going for a walk, but I don’t know when we will be able to go for a walk together.  The weather was amazing when my wife daughter and I took Leia out.  It had been raining before which influenced our choice of destination.  Leia got to meet other dogs and we all bonded.

We did bond as a family later though, playing Pointless.  We played two rounds, and it was fun.  This is a game I definitely will want us all to play again.  Maybe tomorrow...

Gosbecks Archaeological Park

Today we relaxed. The highlight of the day was when me daughter and I took Leia to Gosbecks Archeological Park.  We had planned on a family walk outside, but my wife needed to rest after yesterday and my son and daughter could not agree on a place to visit.  So instead of the five of us, or even the four of us, it was just three.  She loved seeing and meeting other dogs, though things had not gone to plan this morning when she saw six dogs, meeting one, being barked at by two and ignored by the other.

As the day draws to a close, I am watching Gilmore Girls with my wife while Leia chews on my slippers.

Christmas 2020

The woof alarm, i.e. Leia, woke us up and I went down to keep her company after taking her out for her walk.  She does not like walking about at night.  Well, in the dark.

Later my wife took great pleasure in waking my daughter.  Revenge for may years of her rushing into our room shouting about how it is Christmas was sweet for her.

I had intended to help with cooking but was not able to do so having not slept that well.  But I was woken for lunch which we all enjoyed.  Later in the day we played a game of scrabble.  My son almost won, but I pipped him at the last.  I am proud of him and would have been pleased deep down if her had beaten me.

The day was very different to our Christmas last year, but we all agreed that having Leia with us made it better.  I think that she felt left out when it came to eating lunch naps well as opening our presents.  But thanks to one of the patients that I have seen, she got to enjoy Christmas as well when she got a present.

Leave a light on

Quick update on the family.  They appear to be enjoying the holiday.  Both occasionally contribute towards global warming than is needed, one leaving the light on in their room, the other forgetting to switch of the television.  I do hope they get to relax as for one reason or another, both have had a few stresses this year.  Saying that, I do wish that they could relax without using up energy which could and should be saved.

Leia does calm them down though and since she has been at home, while we have still argued, they have been not as often.  One thing though, at work today, I joked that a common denominator when it comes to her leaving a mess on the floor has been when a particular one of the kids has been looking after her.  Today, on getting home, I found the same had happened.  The child concerned had taken her out to do her business in the garden.  She did her wee and then they brought her back in rather than giving her time to open her bowels outside.  So she did it on the kitchen floor when brought in, while my wife was cooking and the kids were both not around.  She was not too pleased.

Arsenal and Stewart Houston

When it comes to Arsenal, we look doomed and for now, are in free fall.  Watching the highlights on Match of the Day, we appeared to give Everton a game, but this view has not been shared by allI do remember a terrible run when Stewart Houston was given control of Arsenal after George Graham, an amazing manager for the team, was sacked for corruption.  We managed to pull things around then and given got to the final of the European Cup Winners Cup, before the loss to THAT goal.  A goal that the Spurs fans at my work will remind me about from time to time.

I am not sure if this is just very bad luck or if we need a change in manager.  Ideally, it should be the team that are changed, but I am not sure that the mentality in Arsenal can be changed easily and due to this, Mikel Arteta may need to leave.  He is a great manager in many ways, and I am forever grateful to him for his service as a player and manager, especially when it comes to the team winning the FA cup last season.

At least the women's team are showing the men how to win!

Bill and Oti

Congratulations to Bill and Oti. I loved them and was amazed and the improvement Bill showed throughout the series.  It was nice in that my daughter watched it with us, as did Leia.  My son however has grown out of it.

We had hoped to go for our first walk with Leia, but as my son is in quarantine, this was not possible.  Instead she met the puppy of a friend of my daughter. Leia loved meeting another dog and had to be dragged away especially when the other dog started to growl on occasion.

So it will be Wednesday when we take a family walk with Leia who I am sure will love it more than we will.

Bubbles, my son and COVID

My son was sent home from school today.  One of the children in his bubble at school has been diagnosed with COVID.  My wife went to collect him and only remembered that he cycled in when she got there.

While it is a concern, we just have to cross our fingers that he does not get it.  If he does, being so young, the odds are that he will have no symptoms.  We will probably not be so lucky.

He has no concerns about being trapped at home as this means he has an excuse to play on devices and watch television. If it was not for the official call from his school, one might think that he faked it!

Arsenal and alien abductions

Mikel Arteta has been great for Arsenal as a player and manager.  Winning the FA cup in his first season in charge was amazing, and as an Arsenal fan, winning it for the 14th time was astounding.

But things are not good now.  He did well to motivate a team that had lost its drive under Unai Emery, despite his early success.  But that team has lost the motivation and drive that it had last season, and for the early part of this season.  The simple facts are that the team is producing results that could mean relegation.  Teams do not seem to need to fear us any more and I fear for our team in the next gameUnai Emery has shown that he is a great manager at Villarreal which means that I suspect, the issue is with the team.

Before Arteta was employed, I had wanted José Mourinho to join us.  I felt that we needed someone to reorganise the team, and like he has done in other teams, he has won titles and trophies, and almost always has left the team in a better position than when started there.  The difference there of course is with Manure but even there, he won the league and Europa cups.  I am grateful to Mikel Arteta for his service as a manager and player, but now in hindsight, it may have been better if we had taken on José Mourinho instead.  A manager like him would have been able to reorganise the team, motivate them and change the mentality that they had.  He would have annoyed them and like in all the other teams he has been in, would have been sacked after losing the dressing room, but I would have taken him for what he could do for our defence.

But it may not be the fault of Arteta for not being to reinvigorate the team.  It may be that the some of the players have been abducted by aliens.  We have a striker who has only scored in our own goal recently, and Willian who has been great before has now appeared to vanish.  Another explanation, other than alien abduction is that they have identical twins who are playing for them.  Personally, I think that it is the first part of an alien invasion with the players being replaced by alien clones.

Hopefully I am wrong and the form of Arsenal will pick up.  Starting on Wednesday.

Pots within pots

Yesterday was my first day back at work.  My wife looked after Leia who had a step backwards in toilet control.  On getting back of all the members of the family who were glad to see me, Leia was the one who was the happiest.  My wife loves it when she licks my face with happiness.  She does not allow this to happen and I am going to have to consider following her lead on this.

I did get to start watching The Mandalorian with him only to find that during it, Leia had done a wee and a poo on the floor before retiring to her crate to get some sleep.  While disappointed that she has relieved herself in the floor, I was so proud to see that she has decided the crate is where she sleeps.  Sadly we did not get to continue the tale of the evil little green man, but I am hoping to watch it with him tomorrow.

Today was flu clinic.  Due to COVID-19, it was as socially distanced as we could manage.  Patients had appointment times and there was a one way system through the surgery.  It went on a lot longer and needless to say, it was exhausting. Ideally l social distancing should limit the spread of influenza as was seen six months ago in the Southern Hemisphere but as seen with the rise in numbers of those affected by COVID, this may not happen.

Leia was happy to see me.  The family took her to have her vaccinations while I was vaccinating others.  When on one of her garden walks with me she had eaten a slug, for which I have been told off.  One way of stopping her eating all in the garden is to get her to carry a flower pot.  She appears so proud to do so.  This evening before putting her to bed on her last toilet walk she decided to put a smaller one in a bigger one.  I was amazed that she was able to comprehend this, though she did get frustrated later when trying to repeat the feat.  I know that Cockapoo’s are smarter than the average dog thanks to their poodle heritage, but I was surprised to see this.  I did not expect to see attempts at problem solving and it will be interesting in the next few days to see if this was a fluke, or something that will continue.

The Bad Education Movie

I watched this with my daughter.  Not sure it was the most appropriate film to do so and at times, she averted her eyes.  We had watched the series and had enjoyed it.  We are also watching Jack Whitehall in Fresh Meat (my daughter self censors herself when it comes to this) and the characters are similar, but with his accent, playing a part other than being posh and entitled is a bit difficult.  But he plays these comedic roles well.

Normally, I would say that the film is too predictable and corny and if you are watching this without watching the TV show, it may not be as enjoyable.  But taken in context of the show, this is enjoyable and full of laughs.  If you do not enjoy the series, you will not enjoy this.  Saying that, it is a bit more slap stick than what I am used to with the BBC show.

It was nice to see bits of Cornwall such as the Eden project which we had visited in the past.  My daughter was not able remember this, but she was very young when we had been there.  I would like to take them back, but with the plague being an issue, I am not sure when this will be possible again.  One day...

My last day of pupternity leave

The kids adore Leia.  And she adores them.  It has been great being at home over almost the last two weeks.  Tomorrow I return to work.  I have been keeping myself up to date with the COVID19 vaccinations, which despite what the media has been told, will not be rolled out in a major form this week.  But being at home with my wife, children and puppy has just been amazing.  Leia has made it exhausting as well (she woke me up at 0430 today) but she is worth it.  She gets hold of me now if she needs to wee or poo, though we need to get her to make it clearer as there was one accident with me in charge.  Not counting the night-time ones that is, but that is to be expected as her bladder has not grown to the level it is needed to keep her dry.

My wife cannot believe what has happened to me and laughed long and hard when Leia licked all over my face earlier, including my (closed) eyes.  It did mean that my face was washed, though it was with dog slobber!

Anyway, night night.

Taking Lives

This was sort of a family film.  Since we have Leia, we are watching films in our extension more using the PlayStation that our friend David gave the family. My wife and I watched it while my son played on the Switch and my daughter came down later and watched the last half with us.

It was a good thriller.  It kept me guessing and I love a film that I cannot predict.  I am surprised that I had not heard of it before, especially as this was released before we had children, in a time when I watched films in the cinema and on DVD much more often and did not have to spend as much time at work as I do know.

The downside of thrillers is that they tend not to be as enjoyable the second time around.  I guess I may watch this one more time in the future, but only if it is already on. As good a film as it was, I have no overwhelming desire to watch it again.

When it comes to the family, we all seem calmer now Leia is in our lives.  It snowed today and while she was scared of if at first in the early hours of the morning, she got used to it and in fact, loved it.  Her enjoyment of the snow was only curtailed when the dog next door barked and terrified her.  The kids loved watching her evening period of insanity though not when she got a bit too keen on biting.

Anyway, to bed.  She woke me up at 0530 and I expect and encore tomorrow morning.

A battle of wills

Today I worked from home on my last day before pupternity leave.  Leia slept through the night and had did really well, just the one poo and one wee inside.  Getting her to do a poo before bed was a challenge.  It involved walking about the garden for over half an hour.  She kept trying to drag me inside and did two wee’s but finally did a poo.  Which I am hoping means none in her crate tonight.

The kids live her and she loves them.  One has clicked with her more than the other, but only because they have become more confident around dogs through playing with the puppies of friends.

I am hoping that the other gets better and we watched an episode of 12 Puppies and Us with them.

Considering how tired I am when I was not in charge of her, part of me is dreading what is going to happen when I am in charge of her tomorrow.  Especially with how active she can be when she is full of energy.

Kick Ass 2

A great film.  My daughter and I watched it together.  Like with the first film my son showed some interest but like with the first film he decided not to watch it.

It was his loss as I think it was a great film.  Some parts of the film were obvious but there were many surprises, many of them amusing to say the least.  Like the first film, it is not based on normal superhero films, these being trained but mostly normal humans. No mutants, no special powers, but normal Hollywood accuracy when it comes to bullets being fired.  Being a nerd, the film is going to call to me, after all, it is about my kind.  I am not sure if it is a good or bad thing that my children can understand the references in the film though!

Never have I been so glad to pick up poo

This morning on taking Leia outside for her morning walk, she did a wee.  And then afterwards, she opened her bowels in the garden.  After the weekend we had, I have never been so glad of that!

A poo filled day

Knackered.

Last night Leia would not settle.  And did a poo in her crate.  It went everywhere.  We tried to get her to do a poo in the day yesterday but this failed.  So we cleaned out the crate, the sides and the mat inside.  It took ages, and the smell was terrible.  My daughter helped us but the barking after we left went on for ages.

Today, she has done one wee outside.  But has done two poos inside and three wee’s.  We get a warning of a second or two before she does it which makes things harder.  One wee was just before I took her outside to see if she would pass water in the garden.  One poo was within five minutes of me taking her in after waiting with her for ages outside for her to do a poo!

She is lovely though and has warmed all our hearts.  Apparently the kids did snap today, but I did not get to see this. Leia may make things better between them.

I am at work tomorrow and my wife is going to manage things alone with her.  Fingers crossed...

Leia and her first day with us

My wife and I woke up at 0530 and left home soon afterwards on a journey to Lincolnshire.  The kids were asleep and the two of us were excited to be on our adventure.  We swapped over when we got to Cambridge after a quick coffee break so my wife could get some kip and I drove instead.  The drive to our destination was about two and a half hours, plus the time for our break.  But it was worth it.  We have seen Leia on video, interacting with Jo her breeder on Messenger as well as seeing updates on Facebook on most days.  But seeing her in person was amazing.

My wife had made the car as ready as she could without letting the kids know what we were up to, but it was not puppy ready.  So after taking Leia, my wife had a socially distanced chat with Jo while I got the car ready.  Then it was time for the journey home,  my wife sat in the back of the car with her and while she was trembling.  During the journey she appeared to settle down, though licked my wife lots, including her glasses.

The children, when we got home guessed that Leia was arriving but they were ecstatic to see her and today we have all been bonding with her.  She has formed a strong attachment to my daughter who has gained in confidence with dogs by playing with the dogs of two friends of hers, but there is no doubt that she loves us all.  The picture was taken by my son earlier today.  Hopefully she will sleep tonight but based on the comments of the owners of her litter mates who picked up their puppies last night this is not going to be the case.

Leia the Puppy

The house is now puppy ready.  Not all of it, just the areas where Leia is to be allowed.  Actually, we think it is puppy perfect.  We have a barrier that we will need, but it tips over.  We are hoping to fix that!

12 Puppies and Us

Have been watching 12 Puppies and Us today.  We have tried to get the children to watch it, but they do not have the stamina for an hour of learning about dogs.  Which is worrying as we are to get a dog later this year.

They are in bed right now and my wife and I are watching Only Connect.  She has managed to do quite well on this while I have need the answers explained to me.

And finally, I am not sure if this is less or more humiliating, my Instagram account was hacked and loads of spam was posted.  The worst bit was that they got more comments than my normal posts!

Pokémon GO and trading

Time has been good for trading.  Niantic have increased the distance at which we can trade until the end of month.  And due to COVID, meeting up to trade a Pokémon can carry risk, though this can be done in a socially distanced manner.  Saying that, it has been nice trading from my living room, but I need to be clear about what I am after.

Learning from racism

Yesterday two of our friends popped round to have a chat in our driveway.  It was very socially distanced, but it was nice to see and talk to friends.  One thing discussed was the outcry over the advert that Sainsbury's have had this Christmas because it features a family who are all black.  We agreed on two things.  It is right for this advert to be shown.  And Sainsbury's have already let shoppers who disagree with inclusivity know that they can always shop elsewhere

And this brings me onto an issue that has come up in the aftermath of the elections in the USA. Notably racism in US politics.  I know that Donald Trump does not mean to sound racist, but he has, an example being his comments on a Judge, American by birth.

One of the allegations was that, when working with his father, the company he ran employed a racist housing policy, aiming to exclude black people.  While some have argued that this was the action of his father, and that he should not be held accountable for that, he was named in the court papers with his father.

The other allegation is that the Democrats are the party of racism.  They were, and my daughter has been learning about this during this term at her schoolBut now, the Republicans are the party that White Nationalists flock to.  Yes, there have been KKK members in the Democratic Party and one that is mentioned is Robert Byrd.  But what people forget that that he renounced racism and worked towards bringing about civil rights for Americans that were not dependent on skin colour.  Just like Johnny Lee Clary.

Global warming and my children

I think my children may not care too much about climate change.  Last night, the lights were left on downstairs, though hey tried to pin the blame for that on me.  Tonight, one left all the lights on as well as the television.

At least this time the child accepted the blame.

Up!

Our family film today was Up!  My daughter watched it aged about 3 or 4 and both loved and was upset by it.  We watched it as this film changed my view of dogs, and getting a dog, I thought it would be a good idea to watch it.

We were in tears soon after it started, but loved Dug the dog.  I am not sure it if will help them with Leia, our dog to be, and we will never know, but it was great to watch.

My wife has continued to be amazing with her drive to organise the house to be ready before Leia arrives. The amount of productivity she has with this is exhausting.  But she is just amazing and while knackered, is still slogging on.

Trump and the US election

Donald Trump is fighting for the election.  It appears that the strategy is that he is aware that he cannot win if states certify the results of the voters.  If he is able to keep the result in doubt, then he may be able to stop the presidency being awarded to Joe Biden when the Electoral College meets.  If this happens, then the decision as to who is to be president is made in the US House of Representatives, there the Republicans have a lead.

I am sure that this is the justification for not working towards a peaceful transition of powerBut to be fair, Trump never said he would allow this anyway.

If Trump does get away with this, it means that the legitimacy of the US to comment on the democratic processes in other nations will be harmed further.  I say further, as the US does have a history of ignoring the democratic will of other nations electorates.

An exam is coming up

This morning I went into work to catch up with some work.  My daughter came along as well as she is now doing quite often as she finds it easier to do her homework there than at home.  Our Saturday morning trips now involve a drive to get some coffee at a drive through before heading to my work.  She also gets a toastie while I eat breakfast at home before we leave.

It means that I do not get to cycle to work which is something that I blame for my ever expanding waistline.  My Wednesday job used to burn off a lot of calories, but due to lockdown, I work from home on a Wednesday instead.  After I got back, I did go for a walk, not a bike ride as it was after dark.  My wife has been hard at work preparing the house for our puppy with my son helping her.

When relaxing, we watched Strictly Come Dancing, as well as The Voice UK and we both fell in love with the Waitrose advert which we think sums up the Christmas spirit and reflects how our nation is best when we decide to #BeKind to each other.

Chicago 7

We have finally finished watching this!  My daughter and I have been watching this in bits, but she found it upsetting hence watching it in instalments.  She was encouraged to watch it by her school.

It was enlightening.  I was aware of the injustice that black Americans faced in that time, but I was not aware of just how bad things could be for white people who did not conform to what the state wanted.

She will watch political things with me and now is politically aware.  She blames me for this, but I suspect that she would have become like this anyway.

When I was a child, my parents exposed me to this as well.  My son is aware of political issues, but being two years younger appears more interested in matters such as talking to this friends on his mobile.  That may change with time.

How much is that doggy in the window

On the weekend, we told the children, that they are to get a dog.  My wife has wanted a dog for a very long time, and so have the children.  When we got my daughter her fish, it was to prepare her for a dog.  She did not look after it.  The children promised to look after Ron, our hamster, but they did not.  The argument they had to get it over a fish was that a hamster can be played with while you cannot do this with a fish.  Several people we know have got a dog and I think my wife broke.  Of course, during lockdown, the prices of dogs have shot up, but she has researched into this, and has decided to get a dog.

I guess as it is for her, that is acceptable.  Because I know that the children will not look after it as much as it needs looking after.  People at work with a dog are very happy for us, and they have pointed out that it is good that the dog is for my wife as if all goes well, the children will leave home in a few years.

My wife had contacted a breeder, and we were to collect the dog after lockdown.  But this may not be possible, so the odds are that it will be delivered to us.  And this weekend, we got to pick it.  This had to be done via facetime due to COVID as we were not able to travel to see them.  We were not expecting to pick as we were the last to sign up for the litter, but someone had to drop out, so my wife got to pick between a boy and a girl puppy.  Both looked adorable, but she picked the girl after I said I wanted the boy.

I am unprepared for a dog but the children are very excited and have named her already.  So if anyone has any tips...

Trump, the US elections and the law

Everyone I know is happy that they think that the US election is over and that Trump has won.  But I am wary as I think that he may win the elections in the courts.

I am sure that many people think that I am insane when it comes to this, but let us face it.  He has tangled with the law before and has managed to avoid being termed racist when it came to his housing policies, avoided being found guilty of collusion with Russia (though a few people were sent to jail in the process of the Mueller report) and also has managed to avoid being impeached.

He and his team are to challenge the election results in the courts.  And these will include courts where he has appointed people, notably the US Supreme Court.

I hope that the court cases are won by Biden and that he becomes the next US president.  But if this happens, those who hope that Trump will be jailed due to his actions will find that his judges will not jail him.

Voting for a man who boasts about sexual assault and encourages the Far Right.

I am not shocked by the behaviour of Donald Trump in making unsubstantiated claims of electoral fraud.  I am shocked that so many Americans have voted for a man who has boasted about sexual assault and has encouraged the far right.

He has stated that his claims with sexual assault was just locker room talk, but I while I have heard men talk about what they would like to do to other women, I have never ever heard one boast that he had sexually assaulted one.  While many who read this will say that the women let him grab them, I would like to refer them to the video about how women facing assault freeze.

And when it comes to backing the Far Right, I understand why he does not want to alienate one of his major voter groups.  I do not understand why so many Americans still vote for him, notably, those from groups that the Far Right wish to act against.

Anyway, a lot of people are optimistic that Biden will be President.  I am not.  I see this going to the courts and that means the Supreme Court where they will back Trump.

COVID19 and the nation developing herd immunity through infections

I am livid

On BBC Any Questions earlier today, Richard Tice spread fake news stating that a lockdown is not needed and that the nation can develop herd immunity by allowing low risk people to become infected.

He is either ignorant of the facts, or is deliberately lying.

The facts are simple.  COVID19 mutates.  We are not dealing with just one infection, but many subsects.  The latest mutation to hit the news has occurred in Denmark and these mutations mean that we cannot assume that we can acquire herd immunity by allowing the population to become infected as different strains exist.

Anyway, stay safe and take care.

Our final day in East Sussex

It was quite windy today which meant that I was not able to go for my usual walk in the morning as my wife had made me promise that I would put my life at risk by doing so.  Instead my daughter decided to accompany me to a walk on the promenade at Hastings, or St Leonards (I had not made a decision then).  But as I would need to drive, my wife took us and she let us to walk while she went to the Art Gallery.  My son stayed behind playing Among Us to his heart’s content.

But I did not end up going for a long walk.  Instead we went to the end of the promenade to watch the waves come in and soak those who got too close to them.  My wife rang as the gallery was not open till later so we met up.  My daughter and she went to the lifeboat shop, but due to social distancing were not allowed in.  I went to walk a bit and took a photo of the lifeboat itself before walking to watch the sea again.

We had coffee nearby and went to the gallery before she did a bit of shopping.  After this, it was time for an amazing lunch at The Wild Mushroom.  We collected our dog bowls (I am happy for them to be used to feed a cat or rabbit instead) and then got some dinner before returning back to rest.

Time to pack tomorrow and return to Colchester.

Just accept the findings on anti-Semitism

Labour is in danger of destroying itself due to the reaction of a past leader over anti-Semitism.

Let me start this by saying that I do not think that Jeremy Corbyn is anti-Semitic. In the past, he organised a demonstration against a 1970s National Front march through Wood Green; spoke on the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street and has signed numerous Early Day Motions condemning antisemitism.  In addition to this, in 1987, he campaigned to reverse Islington Council's decision to grant the planning application to destroy a Jewish cemetery, and in 2010, he called on the UK government to facilitate the settlement of Yemeni Jews in Britain.  He also took part in a ceremony in his Islington constituency to commemorate the original site of the North London Synagogue and visited the Theresienstadt Ghetto, calling it a reminder of the dangers of far-right politics, antisemitism and racism.

But, like many throughout all wings of the party, he has been linked to those who hold anti-Semitic views.  Unlike the others though, he has been held up to greater scrutiny, and example being how up to 2013, Jeremy Corbyn and Jewish Labour MP Gerald Kaufman attended "two or three" of the annual events of a group linked to holocaust denial.  A huge example of this is a novel by our current Prime Minister which included anti-Semitic characterisations, interspersed with many other parts viewed by many as racist.  It is right that Labour, under his charge, has been investigated for prejudice, but it is frustrating that the Conservatives have in essence got away with Islamophobia.

The difference is that under Corbyn, Jewish MP’s have been hounded out of the party by those using racist slurs.  Under Corbyn, those who claimed to support him have harassed those of Jewish descent.  And Labour, under Corbyn, did not bring in the findings of the Chakrabarti Inquiry, a report it commissioned itself!

While Jeremy Corbyn was in charge, there was an exaggerated perception that Labour was anti-Semitic, this not just being amongst those of Jewish heritage, but also among anti-Semites.  Nick Griffin, the former leader of the far right BNP thought that Jeremy Corbyn was going to act against Jews and tweeted in support of his perception of him on this matter.  Emily Thornberry was approached by anti-Semites during the time Jeremy Corbyn was in charge to offer support and she would make it clear that such views were not acceptable.

I had been suspended by Twitter. I felt that this was wrong, but someone independent looked at my tweet and felt it did breach the terms and conditions of the site.  So I accepted the findings and deleted the offending tweet.  Labour has been subject to a report from the EHRC, a neutral body and it is important for Corbyn to accept to the findings. There are ways of hinting at disagreement with the findings without expressly saying so.

The facts are simple.  Jewish MP’s were hounded out from the party using anti-Semitic language and the party did not implement the findings of the inquiry into anti-Semitism which it had commissioned itself.

I do not think that Corbyn is anti-Semitic, but he has been failed by supporters who did not follow his desire for Kinder Gentler Politics.  If they had followed that mantra, this could all have been avoided.

Relaxing in Hastings

At the moment, while typing this, I am watching The Sister with my wife.  It is the final episode and I think it is perfect for Halloween.

My walk was a much longer one than before and took me past the ponies that my daughter did not get to see and I found a cave.  A small one, but one the kids would have loved to explore.  My wife did get worried with it though as I did not get back as soon as I have with other walks.  After that though, with lots of up’s involved, I was knackered and had to rest, and fell asleep doing so.

After this we went to lunch in Hastings itself which was, to quote Borat, very nice.  After this, it was a drive to get my wife and son a book each.  For her it was the new book by Nigella.  The shop had sent some back as they had an issue with the covers but had some without any mistakes just in.

All in all, it was a very relaxing day.

Lewes

After my walk this morning we went to Lewes.  It was a longer drive than we anticipated, but considering that we did not look to see where it was, that could have been expected.

The forecast for the day was not good, but it showered and had sunny spells at times.  Most of the time on my walk, it did not rain, but did drizzle at times, and rained a bit more for a short period, the wind driving the drops into my face like little knives.

At times on our drive to Lewes, it poured down, and at other times, it was sunny.  When there we ate in a lovely shop that also served food before looking for books.  My son wanted to buy a book on magic which we found displayed in a shop for older books.  Needless to say, my wife and I said no.

Not sure what we will do tomorrow, but I do hope I get to walk around again.

Painting at Slap N Dash Ceramics

Today we did some painting. My wife saw that it would rain a lot today so booked a session painting ceramics.  We have done this on other holidays and have enjoyed it.  This time we painted dog bowls.  The kids want a dog and I think that they are hoping to break me down.  My wife appears to have her heart set on one particular breed.  I am more open to the different types of breeds, including mongrels.

The lady in charge of the place arrived late as she was stuck behind a learner driver, but it was worth the wait.  Unlike other places, the tutorial before painting was much better and we also got to use stamps and stickers, something we never had the chance to use in the past.  I used stickers, as did my wife.  My son appeared to want to use them at first, but I am not sure what happened after that.  My daughter made use of a stamp.

Unlike before, when my creation was the worst by far, I would like to say that mine was best.  The rest of the family disagree with me, but we all agree that this was our best experience yet.  And we loved the previous ones.  In addition to the tutorial we got given helpful ideas and suggestions as well as advice how to make our creations better.  In other places, we were left to get on with it after the initial much briefer talks.

I had been for a walk in the wind and rain before we went, but despite my stomach getting bigger my wife did not want me to go for a walk when we got back.  Instead I played Among Us with the children and also Dobble.  My son was very pleased when he beat his sister and me.  Normally she wins which made his victory even sweeter.

For those wondering about Twitter and me, I deleted the offending tweet when a neutral voice said that it was a bit suspect.  So I am back to tweeting, and reading stories behind the headlines.

Good night all!

Rye, East Sussex

Am still suspended from Twitter.  Which is still annoying but I expect it to continue for a long time.

Back to the holiday though.  It rained a lot last night which woke us up at different times at night.  And then the local cockerel decided to wake us up.  Which it has been doing since we arrived.

So in the morning the kids were up when I ate the remnants of the takeaway from last night and then my daughter and I went for a walk.  I had asked my son but he was not interested.  We went to find the wild ponies that I had seen yesterday.  But they were not to be found.  We did walk down a path to find them but my daughter was concerned that the ponies would attack us and that birds would feast on our corpses.  So we turned around.  We did walk everywhere that she wanted to go, which put her in a bad mood.

We then went on a drive to Rye.  It was lovely driving through the sun but once there, the heavens opened.  Fortunately this was only for a short period of time and we walked through part of the town before stopping for lunch.  Initially we had only wanted to stop for a snack, but the place was so nice we stayed for longer.  We drove to Battle afterwards but it was too crowded to walk about in a safe manner.  I have always wanted to visit here so we will have to return another time.

I did have a chat with my son about bonding.  After my father died, and watching Life on BBC, I wanted to act to try and bridge the increasing gap between us.  We have watched The Mandalorian together before, but he has decided to watch it without me.  I go for walks with my daughter and we watch several television shows together.  I hope that my son and I do not drift apart beyond the point of repair.

Tomorrow it is meant to rain a lot more so our day has been planned in advance.  Hopefully I will have Twitter back but I doubt it.

Day one (or two) in East Sussex

I am not sure if this is our first day or not here.  While we arrived yesterday, it was at nighttime so while we are charged for the day, we have not spent any daytime here, until today.

After waking up, enjoying the extra hour in bed, we relaxed and ate bits of food, this being cheese on my part, followed by a large packet of crisps.  After this, we went through the inventory and noted a few issues.  Saying that, the place is great and the few issues do not really matter, but they are issues which were present before we got here.  We also found out why we ended up in the wrong place last night, and that was because the last two letters of the postcode had been switched around in the email telling us how to get here.   I had intended to go for a long walk in the morning but did not get round to it.  My daughter and I went for a brief exploration and saw the garden attached to where we are staying, accessed from the balcony in the upstairs bedroom.  We may explore the garden more during the rest of the week.

Afterwards we went into Hastings.  We had intended to find a supermarket but needed food and ended up driving to a McDonalds which was not a drive though.  During this exploration of Hastings, my wife showed the kids where she used to visit when younger and we ended up having some substandard fish and chips on the sea front.  Two supermarkets later we headed home and I went for my walk in the end.

The walk was awesome.  The place we are staying allows dogs to stay and I can see why dog owners would come as there is lots of places for them to walk.  The view from there was spectacular and I found wild ponies,  I am hoping to return tomorrow to walk more, with or without the rest of the family.
